The Advancement In Treating Athletes Knee Injuries
Diseases or unfortunate accidents are the main causes for knee amputation. It could be the worst nightmare for anyone, especially the athlete. Life tough at times and you never know what is store for you. Nevertheless, we could try our best to never let our spirits down and move on. Gone are the days when you had to attach a wooden log in place of your lost legs. Latest scientific advancements help us in this regard, thanks to the wide variety of prosthesis available in the market. Prosthesis is a device which replaces body parts after amputation. Prosthetic knees also called transtibial prosthesis is an artificial limb that replaces the leg below the knees. Over the years, there have been advancements in prosthetic knees. Metals and woody materials have been replaced by plastics and other materials like carbon fiber, have allowed artificial knees to be stronger and lighter. Thus, the patients have to use very less extra energy to operate these limbs. Additional materials have in fact improved the look and feel. Prosthetic knees look much more realistic these days and make it very hard to tell the difference.
Let Us Look Into Some Of These Devices
Hydraulic And Pneumatic Devices: These are knee devices which consist of pistons inside cylinders containing air in case pneumatic or fluid in case of hydraulic knee devices. Pneumatic control compresses air as the knee is flexed and stores the energy. When the knee moves into extension it then returns the energy. Spring coils are also used to enhance the gait. Pneumatic systems are known to provide superior swing control compared to mechanical knee systems but is less effective than hydraulic systems which are much more fluid. Hydraulic knee systems provide the closest thing to normal knee function for highly active amputees. Hydraulic systems use a liquid medium like silicone oil instead of air to respond to a wide range of walking speeds. Hydraulic knees provide a smoother gait, they are heavier. Moreover, they require more maintenance and care. They also come with a higher initial cost.Myoelectric Devices: The use of electronics has become very popular these days. Cable operated limbs were popular for a long time until myoelectric devices came along. Myoelectric knee devices control the limbs by converting muscle movements to electrical signals. A typical myoelectric prosthesis uses electromyography signals from muscles contracted normally in an amputee's limb. They work on the surface of the skin to control the movements of the artificial knee.
Microprocessor Controlled Devices: These devices are the latest and most expensive answer to knee amputation. Microprocessor controlled prosthetic knee joints have been developed which controls the flexion of the prosthetic knee. Thus, it is able to mimic the knees functionality in a normal gait. The microprocessor interprets and analyses signals from knee-angle sensors and moment sensors. These signals are used to determine the type of motion being employed by the amputee. Most microprocessor-controlled knee-joints are powered by a battery which is contained inside the prosthesis. The greatest advantage is that variation of speed is much more possible. The change in speed is taken into account by sensors and communicated to the microprocessor, which adjusts to these changes accordingly. It has also enabled amputees to walk down stairs like normal unlike mechanical knees where you need to take one step at a time. The greatest disadvantage is that extra care should be taken as it is not resistant to water.
