Sports injuries are frequent injuries among players. In addition to that, it is caused because of overuse, direct impact, or the application of force. One of such injuries is a Hamstring injury which causes sudden strain and tears to the tendons or muscles. The 3 grades of hamstring injury are- Grade 1: Mild muscle pull or strain, Grade 2: Partial muscle tear, Grade 3: Complete muscle tear

The period of time it demands to recover from a hamstring strain or tear will depend on how critical the injury is. A minor muscle pull or strain or grade 1 may take a few days to heal, while it could take weeks or months to recover from a muscle tear or grade 2 or 3 types of injury.

Foundations of Hamstring Injuries

A hamstring injury can occur if any of the tendons or muscles are stretched past their limit. It occurs during unexpected movements, such as sprinting, lunging or jumping, etc.

The recurring injury is popular in athletes and sportsmen, as you're more likely to damage your hamstring if you've damaged it before. Stretching and strengthening exercises and warming up before exercise, may help reduce the risk of harming your hamstring.

Procedure for Treatment

Recovering from a hamstring injury takes days or weeks or months, depending on how severe the strain or tear is. A hamstring injury may take several months to heal and you'll be unable to resume training or play sport during this time.

During the Primary treatment i.e. during the first 2 or 3 days, you should relax your leg as still as you presumably withdraw physical activity. Apply cold packs or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel to your hamstring for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours during the day.

In order to avoid the application of ice directly to your skin, you can compress or bandage the affected area to limit any swelling and movement that could cause further damage.

It is advised that you always keep your legs elevated and supported on a pillow as much as possible, to help reduce any swelling. As suggested by your physician you can take painkillers regularly such as paracetamol or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) cream or gel to relieve pain quickly.

Gentle exercises and stretching should not be strenuous as it could make your injury worse, but no exercise for too long can cause your hamstring muscles to shrink and scar tissue to form around the tear.
